Sally

Sally (pet name Babe) found on Dartmoor by a walker - her mother had twins, moved off with the herd with one foal, forgetting she had another fast asleep behind a huge rock. Reared by Sylvia and Terry - bottle fed every 2 hours day and night for 6 weeks - Sally grew into a happy, healthy little foal - and Terry and Sylvia felt as if they had aged about 10 years!
Unfortunately for everyone at the sanctuary but especially Sylvia we have had to take the very difficult decision to have Sally put down. She had suffered from Laminitis for some time and eighteen months ago we wondered how long we should allow her to continue, so our wonderful vet was called. He took some x-rays and got the farrier to trim in certain places using the x-rays. This worked really well and as long as her feet were regularly trimmed every six weeks, she happily lived at Southcott for the next eighteen months. But recently Ellie and Roland had noticed that she was standing and lying in the same place and really didn’t want to move. The vet was called again and this time he said that the time had come to let her go. Sylvia had hand reared Sally from a day old, bottle feeding her every two to three hours a day and night. A very special bond was created, and as a lively foal nineteen years ago provided staff and visitors with lots of fun and laughter.
