Our Charity Work

The Sanctuary is actually based in the Dartmoor National Park and the welfare of the moorland ponies is of particular concern. Many orphaned and injured foals have been rescued from the Moor, also ponies, and mares with foals, have been bought from the October pony sales.

The first rescued foal, Lucky, is still at the Sanctuary and is now 28 years old. His story was featured by the Sunday Mirror, donations from kind readers arrived and another 10 foals were rescued from the sales. Our most recent foals, Cracker, Rudolf and Snowflake were bought from the Christmas Pony sales in 2008. These lovely animals are now well cared for and have a bright future ahead of them. This is an on-going charity now run by Roland, his wife Alison and daughter Debbie who are all animal lovers.

The charity has excellent Trustees who are known for their integrity and who work tirelessly for the animals. None of the Trustees are paid.

The Charity has been a member of the National Equine Welfare Council for many years and the late Sylvia Phillips served on the Executive Committee.

The NEWC has very high standards and those charities applying for membership are inspected and a report made by a representative of the Committee before their application is put to a vote by the 60 or so other Members at the AGM . With this number of members, all with an interest in equine welfare, situated in various parts of the country only those organisations who are "squeaky clean" are accepted - as if they aren't, someone locally knows all about them!
